PGA of Ontario Remembers Hal Butler

We are saddened to share the passing of PGA of Ontario Class "A" Life Professional, Mr. Hal Butler (1926-2023).

After a legendary life, Harold James (“Hal”) Butler passed away peacefully at the age of 97 at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on December 6th, 2023.

Hal was born in Scarborough, Ontario, the son of Stephen and Susanna (Fawcett) Butler, and leaves behind his partner of 16 years Linda Ellen Furuya, his sons Matthew John (Stephanie Summers) and Peter Russell (Angela Bagnall). Hal is predeceased by his daughter Mary Victoria (Jason Fiorotto), spouses Linda Anne Wilson and Patricia Lawson, brother Ross and sister Vera.

Hal was adored by his grandchildren Nathaniel, Benjamin, Kate, Tessa, Victoria, Molly and Wilson, and the extended Butler and Wilson clans.

Hal will always be a legend at Oshawa Golf and Curling Club where he was the Head Golf Professional for an incredible 40 years, starting in 1951 (the 13th hole is named Old But in his honour). Before Oshawa, he began his golf career as a caddy at Cedar Brae and Scarborough Golf Clubs. Hal then moved on as an Assistant Professional at Thornhill Golf Club.

Hal competed on the PGA Tour and other professional tours for several years alongside legends Arnold Palmer, Moe Norman, Al Balding, and many more ambassadors of the game.

Hal enjoyed winters in Sarasota, Florida, and especially his membership at Palm Aire Country Club.

Please join the family to share memories of Hal at his Celebration of Life on Friday, December 15, from 4 pm to 7 pm at Oshawa Golf and Curling Club, 160 Alexandra Street.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to The Tory Day Fund via CHIMP (www.toryday.org) would be appreciated by the family. For online condolences please visit www.armstrongfh.ca.
