PGA of Ontario donates Hulbert Memorial Fund to PGA of Canada Foundation Benevolent Fund
March 5, 2021
We are pleased to announce that the remaining $55,000 from the Hulbert Memorial Fund will be donated in full to the PGA of Canada Foundation Benevolent Fund, which will temporarily assist past and present PGA of Canada members and apprentice professionals who find themselves in financial hardship.
This donation from the Hulbert Memorial Fund continues to be available to PGA of Ontario members who are eligible for support and will be earmarked specifically to care for Ontario Professionals.
“We have been blown away by the generosity of the PGA of Ontario’s donation of funds from the Hulbert Memorial Fund to the PGA of Canada Foundation Benevolent Fund,” said Teejay Alderdice, President of the PGA of Canada. “It is our mission to make sure the funds donated from the Hulbert Memorial Fund continues to serve its original purpose; helping members of the PGA of Ontario who are in financial need.”
Arthur Hulbert came to Canada in 1923 and was the long-time Head Professional of The Thornhill Club until his untimely death in 1945. Club members and area professionals rallied to raise money for the Hulbert family at the time. An annual tournament in Arthur Hulbert’s name was held for several years to raise money toward the Hulbert Memorial Fund. Over the years, these funds were distributed to various PGA of Ontario members, spouses, and families in need of financial assistance to support medical care, special needs, cost of living, and basic survival needs.
The annual Hulbert Memorial event experienced a steady decline for several years and unfortunately was unable to be revived years ago. The failure of the event led to the Fund being unsustainable, as the majority of the fundraising was a result of the event’s proceeds.
After much deliberation and counsel, the PGA of Ontario Board of Directors made the decision to do something greater with these funds – to continue supporting our Professionals in Ontario while also fueling the launch of the PGA of Canada Foundation Benevolent Fund.
“Nearly seventy-five years ago, PGA of Canada professionals came to the aid of a family in need. Our association has done so time and time again throughout our history. The donation from the PGA of Ontario is a fitting way to kickstart the Benevolent Fund and we thank the PGA of Ontario for its generosity,” said Warren Crosbie, PGA of Canada Past President and Chair of the PGA of Canada Foundation Benevolent Fund.
The Benevolent Fund will provide basics of life such as clothing, food, and shelter, as well as financial assistance for health care services attributable to a mental or physical health condition, to those in need.
