2024 Tour Championship Story

The PGA of Ontario Tour Championship held on September 30th and October 1st at the stunning St. Catharines Golf & Country Club was an unforgettable event. With exceptional weather gracing both days, players and spectators alike enjoyed the surroundings of this beautiful venue. Our heartfelt thanks go out to the hosts and their remarkable staff for making this championship so memorable.

Day one wrapped up with some thrilling playoff action in the women’s division. Both Sadie Dewinton-Davies and Kayla Burke showcased their skills, each finishing the round with a score of 73. As the sun set, the intensity heightened during a two-hole playoff, culminating in a dramatic victory for Sadie on the second playoff hole. Congratulations to Sadie for her impressive win!

As we moved into day two, Brad Kerfoot led the field, having shot an outstanding 6-under par (66) on the first day. Defending champion, Victor Ciesielski, and Gord Burns, the Senior division leader, teed off in the lead group alongside Kerfoot. Ciesielski began the second round at 4-under, while Burns sat at 3-under.

The leaderboard danced throughout the day, but by the afternoon, it was evident that the true showdown was between Ciesielski and Kerfoot. Echoing last year’s Tour Championship, where they faced off for six playoff holes and Ciesielski took the W. The tension built as they battled for the title once more.

At the turn, Kerfoot held a narrow one-stroke lead, only for Ciesielski to tie it with a birdie on 15. However, Kerfoot quickly reclaimed the lead with a birdie of his own on 16, setting up a nail-biting finish.

As they approached the 18th green, the crowd was on the edge of their seats. Both players made steady pars, sealing the victory for Kerfoot by a single stroke.

In the Senior division, Gord Burns displayed remarkable consistency, shooting 69 on both days to secure the Senior Tour Championship title.

This championship never fails to deliver some of the season's most impressive golf, and this year was no exception.

The Tour Championship is not just about the Tour title; it also determines the season-long PGA of Ontario Players of the Year (POY) in various categories, including the prestigious Breenie Cup. Named in honour of the late Bob Breen, a legendary golfer and industry leader, the Chase for the Breenie Cup holds great significance within the PGA of Ontario community.

Special moments were shared when Blair Breen, Bob's son, presented the Breenie Cup to this year’s Players of the Year. In a historic first for the association, there was a tie for the Player of the Year points. An astonishing feat considering the numerous events and complexities involved in how players accumulate POY points.

Both Gord Burns and Brad Kerfoot finished the season with 251.5 points. Burns, a previous recipient, was thrilled to receive this honour again, while Kerfoot was overwhelmed with joy as it marked his first time winning this esteemed title. He fondly recounted a conversation with Blair years ago about his aspiration to win the trophy for Bob, highlighting the deep-rooted connection and history which Kerfoot and Bob Breen shared.

The special sense of community, camaraderie, and honour that golf fosters was on full display throughout the Tour Championship.

James Seymour triumphed as the Apprentice Player of the Year, highlighted by his massive win at the PGA of Ontario’s flagship Zone Championship in July at the Barrie Country Club.

Danny King, with an impressive golf season, emerged as the Senior Player of the Year, secured recently after winning the season-long Match Play Championship at Magna Golf Club in September.

With a tight leaderboard in the Women’s POY series, Sadie’s playoff-win at the Tour Championship secured her the first-place finish as the Women’s Player of the Year!

All Players of the Year will be celebrated at the Year-End Celebration on October 29th at Glen Abbey Golf Club, an event not to be missed (Click here to get your tickets).

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Tour Championship, and a special shoutout to St. Catharines Golf & Country Club for hosting us.

Congratulations once again to Sadie Dewinton-Davies, Gord Burns, and Brad Kerfoot on their fantastic performances!
