Never underestimate what can happen on day 2 of a Championship! David Li Sheman made an impressive climb up the leaderboard to capture the Fall Championship title at Craigowan Golf Club.
Held on Tuesday, August 27th, and Wednesday, August 28th, this 36-hole stroke play event featured stunning conditions on the par 71 course, which was beautifully maintained throughout.
Day 1 concluded with Mike Vance leading at 6-under (65), followed closely by Joseph D'Alfonso at 5-under and Gord Burns at 4-under.
As the final round unfolded, Vance and D'Alfonso remained in contention, tied for the lead at –7 after the front nine. Li Sheman, starting the day at 69, made a notable charge with five birdies on the front nine, moving to T3 with Burns at –6 after 9 holes.
Amidst a flurry of activity, Daniel Kim stole the spotlight with two eagles and four birdies during his round, briefly holding the lead at –9. Li Sheman, a few groups behind, continued his birdie spree and overtook Kim, reaching –10, through 16. With a par on 17 and a birdie on 18, Li Sheman finished at 11-under to take the lead.
The final group consisting of Vance, D’Alfonso, and Burns were the only ones within potential striking distance of Li Sheman’s -11. D'Alfonso made a valiant effort with beautiful back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18, but fell just short of Li Sheman, finishing at –9, along with Kim.
Gord Burns finished at –8 to claim the Senior Fall Champion title and placed solo 4th in the open field!
Li Sheman, ecstatic with his victory and his all-time lowest scoring round of 62, celebrated with his wife and daughter who were there to support.
