Nick Kenney relies on strong Putting Game to take the 2017 Spring Open

June 1, 2017

PETERBOROUGH, ON -- The PGA of Canada - Ontario Zone held the 2017 Spring Open today at Peterborough Golf and Country Club, the first event of their "Chase for the Breenie Cup" presented by Triple Bogey Brewing Co.

The winds were gusting at 40km/hr and the Stanley Thompson designed Peterborough G&CC had been drenched with rain for the better part of the young 2017 season. Head Professional Chris Jones was thrilled to have the PGA of Canada - Ontario Zone Professionals on site to compete for the Breenie Cup. "It's awesome, I think the Breenie Cup is a fantastic idea. This is a great tournament golf course, and to honour Bob Breen in this way, it's really special for us to help kick things off for all the players."

After a bogey on the first hole of the day, Nick Kenney (The National Golf Club of Canada) found his stroke, getting back to even-par right away with a birdie on the second.  He continued his hot hand throughout the round with three more birdies on holes eight, fifteen, and seventeen.  “I’ve been putting poorly lately,” said Kenney after his round.  “I really took some time to make those 4-footers.  With the wet conditions and the high winds it was tough to stay steady over them.”  Kenney managed to keep his ball in play all day and negotiate through the blowing winds on his way to a four birdie, two bogey, 2-under 69 finish.  The 2015 Spring Open Champion was determined to get back into the Spring Open winners circle and take the first leg of the Chase for the Breenie Cup presented by Triple Bogey Brewing Co.  “I think it’s a really great initative and we appreciate Triple Bogey for supporting it,” Kenney continued.  “We need a little bit of support throughout the year and it helps a lot when business’ get involved.”  Kenney took home his share of the $7500 purse and, maybe more importantly, took home 100pts towards the Chase for the Breenie Cup presented by Triple Bogey Brewing Co.

Merit Travel Golf Vacations has been a long time supporter of the PGA of Canada – Ontario Zone and they were on site today at Peterborough Golf & CC on the second hole for a $150 closest to the pin shootout.  Nick Kenney held the lead on the closest to the pin for most of the day until Michael Gartland landed it close to the flag and took home the prize money.
