Team Dalewood Golf Club wins inaugural CFM/Class A Scramble

May 24, 2017

THORNTON, ON - After a beautiful Victoria Day weekend tried to erase an undesirable start to the golf season, the PGA of Canada – Ontario Zone was at Tangle Creek Golf Club on Tuesday for the inaugural CFM/CLASS A Team Scramble.  The brand new event series pairs one Class A Professional with a Candidate for Membership newer to the Association and was designed to facilitate mentorship and create a wider reaching networking experience.

Taking the first ever CFM/CLASS A Scramble title was on twenty-four teams minds as they took to the course but it was the team from Dalewood Golf Club who raised to the top.  Head Professional Brad Pemberton and his Assistant Shea Varty caught fire early and didn’t take their foot off the pedal all day.  They finished their round at an impressive 13-under par and narrowly bested Aaron Wagner (Focus Golf Group) and Thomas Keddy (Oslerbrook Golf Club) who missed a birdie putt on their last hole to finish one back of the lead.

The team from Dalewood Golf Club almost missed the start of the event all together, arriving at Tangle Creek Golf Club at 1:27 for a 1:30 shotgun. That didn’t stop the pair from getting off to a hot start.  Pemberton was making the putter count early in the round and they relied heavily on the long drive of Shea Varty to keep them attacking greens on their second shot.  “Shea made a putt for eagle on the backside,” Pemberton said after the round.  “That got us feeling good about our chances.  We made our shots and the ball was finding the hole.”  The pair from Dalewood Golf Club was 5-under after six holes which propelled them forward into the winners circle.

“I like the new format,” Varty commented. “It’s funny, it seems more directed at getting the CFM’s out playing but I think it’s a great event for the Class A’s to get away from their courses and get a round in.  They’re busier than us most of the time.”  With lowered entry fees of $113/player and an afternoon shotgun, the CFM/Class A Scramble has been tailored to the working PGA Professional.  The second and final CFM/Class A Scramble will be on September 26, 2017 at Turnberry Golf Club in Brampton, ON.

Brad Pemberton/Shea Varty (-13), Aaron Wagner/Thomas Keddy (-12), Gord Burns/Nick Kenney (-11), Bruce Rogerson/Dennis Hendershott (-10), and Chris Near/Sterling Emery (-10) rounded out the top five.
