Billy Walsh Wins Assistants' Championship

Billy Walsh
Wins PGA of Ontario Golf Trends/Golf Pride Assistants' Championship

(Pelham, Ont., - August 8, 2012) Billy Walsh (Fairtree Golf Centre) capped off an incredible two-week stretch of golf by claiming his second PGA of Ontario Championship and adding another $3,360 to his bank account in addition to his runner up finish in last week’s Canada Cup. Walsh’s final round 6-under-par 65 was good enough to edge first round co-leader Michael Resciniti (Copper Creek Golf Club) by one shot at Peninsula Lakes Golf Club. Resciniti carded a 66 in his final round.

Walsh's recent run includes earnings of $16,450 in the Via Rail Canada Cup in Montreal where he finished second losing to Bryn Parry in a playoff. It’s been a great two week run for Walsh who nets almost $20,000 in the two events.

The victory didn’t come easy for Walsh. Micheal Resciniti who began the day tied with Walsh at 5 under opened up a three stroke lead over Walsh going to the back nine with a flawless 5 under 30 on his front nine.

"I still felt I could win. I knew if I could keep applying pressure to Micheal he might cool off and I could catch him. He’s a great player and played a great game of golf today.” said Walsh

Walsh becomes the tenth mutli-year winner in the 56 year history of the Assistants' Championship. That list of successful defending champions includes Jerry Hinds, Dave Levesque and Canadian Golf Hall of Famers George Knudson as well as Bob Panasik.

Other notable scores today included a 4-under-par round from Alf Callowhill (The Clublink Academy at Glen Abby) which vaulted him up the leader board after a first round 73. Home course Professional Colin Murray (Peninsula Lakes Golf Club) and Ed Maunder (Deerfield Golf Club) also climbed the leaderboard today with nice rounds of 3-under 68.
