Merit Golf Vacations Ontario PGA Match Play Set to Begin Tomorrow at Beacon Hall Golf Club

(Pickering, Ont., September 15, 2010) – The final four have been determined for the Merit Golf Vacations Ontario PGA Match Play Championship. Bruce Rogerson from the Ben Kern bracket will face Caleb Ellis from the George Knudson bracket while Matthew Peavoy from the Al Balding bracket will face Billy Walsh who was victorious in the Moe Norman bracket. The Semi-final and championship matches will take place this Thursday September 16, 2010 at Beacon Hall Golf Club in Aurora.

Interestingly all four players have never been to the final’s in the Ontario PGA Match Play Championship which will see the eighth different winner of this event since inception in 2003.

Bruce Rogerson (Brantford) punched his way into the final by beating Dave Levesque, who is possibly the hottest Club Professional in Canada. Their match, which was played at Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge, ended on the 16th hole with a 3 & 2 victory for Rogerson.

“I had a great match against Dave (Levesque) last week,” said Rogerson. “It was extremely windy which made it an extremely difficult day to play, in the end it was pretty close but I came out on top,” added Rogerson, who feels he has a good match play mentality.

Caleb Ellis (Twenty Valley) was this year’s version of the giant killer. Ellis, who essentially came from nowhere, beat a number of great players to claw his way into the final. Some of Ellis’ victims included former Canadian Tour players, Ed Maunder and Dave Wettlaufer as well as long bomber David Banks.

“This summer has been a lot of fun, hopefully I can continue to knock off a couple more big names,” said Ellis. “Beacon Hall is one of my favourite golf courses and I’m really looking forward to playing there in the finals,” added Ellis, the former Twenty Valley Club Champion.

Matthew Peavoy (Rosedale), who is quietly having a nice year on the course, will face Ontario PGA stalwart Billy Walsh. Peavoy is confident about his game despite not having the chance to play Beacon Hall.

“I actually think not playing the course in advance will help me,” said Peavoy, who beat John McCann on the 19th hole to earn his way into the semi-finals. “No question Billy is the favourite but I can’t worry about that, I will just play my game and see what happens come Friday afternoon,” added Peavoy.

Billy Walsh (Beacon Hall) who made it through arguably the toughest bracket en route to the semi final is excited about the opportunity to win on his home course.  Walsh, who knocked off three former match play champions in Andy Holborn, Danny King and Scott Bogle, has to be excited about his chances on Thursday.

“It’s a goal for me at the beginning of every year to get into the final here at Beacon Hall,” said Walsh. “I’m really looking forward to Thursday and if I can get into the final match then anything can happen,” added Walsh, who has worked at Beacon Hall since 2006.

The Merit Golf Vacations Ontario PGA Match Play Championship goes Thursday September 16, 2010 at Beacon Hall Golf Club.  The Semi-final matches will begin at 8:00am with the final and consolation matches will begin at 1:00pm. Check www.ontariopga.com for updates throughout the day.
