Defending Champion Goes Down in Second Round of Merit Golf Vacations Match Play Championship

(Pickering, Ont., June  18, 2010)
- Defending Ontario PGA Match Play Champion Colin Murray (Peninsula Lakes) lost his opening match in the second round of the Match Play Championship to Ontario PGA newcomer Brian McCann (Academy at BraeBen). Although McCann is a newcomer to the Ontario PGA he is a familiar name to many on the Canadian Golf Scene. McCann is a former Nationwide Tour Member and the Great Lakes Tour all time leading money winner.

“Colin definitely wasn’t at his best and I could see that,” said McCann after his match. “He actually needed an extension to get this match in due to a blood infection in his arm, it very well could have been a different result if he was 100%,” added McCann.

The three other final four finishers from 2009 all managed to move on to the next round. Ken Tarling (Ken Tarling Golf Academy) beat Jim Leska (Quarry GC) in the Moe Norman bracket. Brian Hadley (Highlands) was victorious over Gareth Raflewski (Riverbend) in the George Knudson bracket while Gordie Burns (Golden Ridge) beat Thomas Flockhart (St George’s) in the Al Balding Bracket.

Other upsets that occurred in the first round saw 2008 champion Lynden D’Aloisio (Magna) lose to Keir Smith (The National) in the Moe Norman bracket. In the George Knudson bracket, Dave Wettlaufer (Deer Ridge) lost to relative unknown Caleb Ellis (Twenty Valley). Also in the Knudson bracket Cameron Thin (St. Catharines) beat 2009 giant killer J.P. Bedard (International).  In the hotly contested battle between Greg Colekessian (Georgian Bay Club) and Dustin Doyon (Oslerbrook), who have played each other for 3 years in a row, Doyon came out on top and improves his record against Colekessian to 2 and 1.

Matches to watch in the third round include almost all the matches in the Moe Norman bracket. 2007 Champion Andy Holborn will face 2008 Runner Up and 2009 finalist Ken Tarling. Danny King who sits in the number one position on the 2010 AUR Money List will face number two Reggie Millage while Keir Smith and Ian Doig will do battle as well. In the Balding bracket long bomber John McCann (Fairtree) will face the steady John Rushnell (Oshawa). Over in the Knudson bracket Caleb Ellis will try to take over the giant killer role when he faces the ever improving Eddie Maunder (Deerfield). Finally in the Ben Kern bracket Dave Levesque (Academy at BraeBen) will face Dustin Doyon while Brian McCann will look to keep up his winning ways against Tee Jay Alderdice (Devil’s Pulpit).
