Golf Association of Ontario Names Ontario PGA Member Jon Roy as Head Provincial Coach

(December 1, 2009, Uxbridge, Ont.)
– The Golf Association of Ontario (GAO) announced today that Jon Roy has been named as the Association’s new Head Provincial Coach. In this newly created position, Roy will oversee the delivery of all of the GAO’s high performance initiatives for athletes and coaches.

Roy joins the GAO after seven years as a teacher at Henry Brunton Golf, where he has been responsible for the development and maintenance of all junior golf programs as well as the day to day operations of the academy. Named the Ontario PGA Teacher of the Year for Juniors in 2007, Roy has worked with more than 200 families each year to ensure that junior players of all ages are offered opportunities for development through golf. The CPGA Class A professional is also a professor at Georgian College in Barrie, where he has taught in both the degree and diploma Professional Golf Management programs.

“I am honoured to be selected as Head Provincial Coach for the GAO,” said Roy. “Over the past few years I have been a witness to great talent in Ontario - in terms of players and coaches alike - and I'm excited to take on a leadership role in developing this talent even further."

Roy’s responsibilities will include the delivery of the Team Ontario Program of Excellence and Development programs, recruitment systems, scouting programs, camps, seminars and parental education, as well as the development and implementation of the upcoming National Junior High Performance strategy.

Roy will also take the lead in the development of regional provincial coaches while providing mentorship and educational opportunities for new coaches within the GAO’s Coach Development Model.

“I’m very excited about the addition of Jon to our Sport Development Team and look forward to his leadership in developing and expanding quality coaches and athletes across the province,” said GAO Director of Sport Development Mike Kelly.

“Jon has experience not only with teaching junior players, but also training other professionals in the field of junior golf coaching and development, which makes him a great fit for this role.”

Originally a native of Beaconsfield, Quebec, Roy is a graduate of the University of Victoria and the Professional Golf Management Program at Humber College. He is also a certified rules official, GolfPsych Instructor and lead fitter with the Titleist Fitting Centre.

Roy’s first order of business will be to accompany four Ontario junior golfers, two girls and two boys, to the Guatemala Golf Association’s International Junior Golf Championship at Club Campestre San Isidro in Guatemala from December 5th-8th.
