Ontario PGA Wins 2009 Titleist Cup

Ontario Ends 15 Year Winless Drought at Titleist Cup
Ontario Clinches Cup 12.5 to 11.5

(October 9, 2009 – Mississauga, Ont.)
– Ken Tarling sunk a four foot putt on the 18th hole at Mississaugua Golf & Country to halve his match and clinch the 2009 Titleist Cup for team Ontario. This is the first time in 15 years that Ontario has managed to win the Titleist Cup and all of the players on the team are first time winners.

“I’ve never won the cup before and it’s a pretty special feeling,” said Tarling after his match. “Gar did a great job for us, keeping the guys loose and upbeat, and I’m glad we were able to reward him.”

The Ontario team gained the momentum early when Danny King beat former Canadian PGA Champion Jean Louis Lamarre 5 & 4. Billy Walsh won the second match of the day 3 & 2 over Ben Boudreau while Gary Jeffrey pulled out a halve in a up and down battle with one of Quebec’s finest in Serge Thivierge.

Those wins were crucial out of the gate and Dan Greenwood followed up with a solid victory over Jean Laforce 6 & 5. That left the job up to the Assistants’ and Seniors’ who on Day 1 were winless. Both Dave Levesque and Reggie Millage didn’t disappoint winning their matches 1 up respectively.  John Rushnell and Serge Bernier traded wins all day and eventually settled on a halve. That left long time Titleist Cupper and one of Ontario’s ultimate grinders Ken Tarling to either halve or win his match against one of Quebec’s most decorated golfers in Yvan Beauchemin. Tarling had a 1up lead heading into the 17th hole when Beauchemin made a clutch birdie and brought the match to even.

Coincidently both Beauchemin and Tarling play a similar game and the soaking wet golf course which played just under 6900 yards tested both golfers physically and mentally.  On the 430 yard par 4 - 18th hole both players hit driver from the tee and three wood into the green which both came up just short. Beauchemin played first and chipped it to five feet. Tarling followed up with a chip to four feet. Beauchemin made his put which meant Tarling needed the four footer for the win and to erase the 15 year winless drought. Tarling knew what he had to do and with the confidence of a tour player he knocked in the fateful putt.

“Our guys played extremely well today and I’m very proud of their effort,” said the victorious captain, Gar Hamilton. “It was an absolute pleasure to captain this team and I’m so proud of the guys and it was a real thrill to represent the Ontario PGA in a positive manner,” added Hamilton, who coincidently was on the last winning team from in Ontario in 1993.

For the Quebec side the loss was a tough one to swallow but captain Yves Tremblay knew the streak had to end eventually.

“My guys didn’t play as well as they could of today and Ontario took advantage of that,” said Tremblay. “In the end we all had a great time and the spirit of the Titleist Cup is stronger than ever.”

The Titleist Cup or Ontario/Quebec Matches have been played consecutively since 1977. Prior to 1977 the matches were played intermittently from 1961 until the mid 1970's. In total the Quebec PGA has won the matches 21 times while the Ontario PGA has now won it eleven times. Teams are comprised of the top 12 Ontario and Quebec Canadian PGA Professionals. The Titleist Cup has been played at some of the most historic courses both in Ontario and in Quebec including this year's event at Mississaugua Golf & Country Club.

A special thanks to Canterbury belts for providing all Ontario Titleist Cup team members with customized Ontario PGA belts and buckles. Thanks to the staff and members of Mississaugua Golf & Country Club for hosting the annual Titleist Cup Matches.
