(Woodbridge, Ont., September 18, 2009) – Colin Murray (Peninsula Lakes) managed to hang on, despite losing a 2 up lead heading into the 16th hole, to win the 2009 Ontario PGA Match Play Championship over Brian Hadley (Huron Oaks) in extra holes.  Although Murray was victorious by all accounts The National Golf Club of Canada lived up to its expectations as one of the toughest tests of golf anywhere.

“This win feels great,” said Murray after accepting the $5,000 winners cheque. “The course was extremely tough today but with the help of my caddie I was able to pull it out,” added Murray, whose caddie, Les Carr was a former National caddie.

With this win Murray also takes home a three night stay including two rounds of golf at Turnberry Isle Resort in Aventura, Florida compliments of Merit Golf Vacations. Murray’s trip will also include airfare compliments of WestJet.

In the consolation match Ken Tarling (Ken Tarling’s Golf Academy) managed a 2 & 1 victory over Gordie Burns (Golden Ridge).  For Tarling the win was bitter sweet especially after going 19 holes with Hadley earlier in the day.

“I found it extremely tough to play after losing this morning, to be honest,” said Tarling. “Eventually I was able to put it aside because I knew if I didn’t I would be losing pretty handily to Gordie,” added Tarling who was 3 down after 9 holes.

In the semi-final morning matches Murray was victorious over Burns 2 & 1 while Hadley beat Tarling on the 19th hole.

The Match Play Championship began in May with 61 players signed up and slowly but surely players were eliminated on a monthly basis. All told the 2009 Match Play Championship was one of the most exciting tournaments to watch.
