(Montreal, QC,. June 19, 2009) – It was a hard fought battle but in the end the team of Yvan Beauchemin (Grand-Mere)& Carl Desjardins (Blainvillier) were victorious over Jerry Hinds (Heritage Hills) and Danny King (Academy Tee at Magna) 3 & 2. For Hinds and King the loss was tough to take after feeling very positive before the match.

“Today was the best I have felt all week,” said Hinds, who chipped in twice today. “We were sloppy today and didn’t carry out our game plan which was unfortunate,” added King.

That game plan was to have two balls on the green assuring two putts at birdie. Although they had a number of chances, the putts just didn’t fall.

“Yvan and Carl played well today,” said King. “Yvan hit an unbelievable shot on 11 from 221 yards to about a foot,” added Hinds who was very complimentary of the tournament adding, “How many times can you play for $100,000 with your friends,”

For Beauchemin and Desjardin the VIA Cup was their first victory as a team and adds to a growing list of victories for both players. Beauchemin is the reigning Canadian PGA Senior Champion while Desjardins is a former Nationwide Tour player who has won 15 times in Quebec.

“The money is always good but the trophy means a lot,” said Beauchemin who sits fourth all time on the Quebec PGA money list. “The money will be spent but we’ll have the trophy forever,” added Desjardins who currently sits in second spot on the Quebec PGA all time money list.

This was the first year of the VIA Rail Canada Cup which will return to Quebec in 2010. Both division finalist teams will receive exemptions into the championship which could produce another exciting championship match.

The VIA Rail Canada Cup is a four ball (two man) match play tournament comprised of 32 Canadian PGA Professionals in each division from Ontario and Quebec. Ontario professionals face each other on one side of the bracket while Quebec professionals face one another on the other side. In the end the top Ontario team takes on the top Quebec team which determines the overall winner.
