Gar Hamilton Chosen to Lead Titleist Cup Team

- Will Captain Ontario Team at Home Course in October

(Pickering, Ont., March 25, 2009) - The Ontario PGA is pleased to announce the appointment of Gar Hamilton to the prestigious post of Titleist Cup Captain. Gar is a Titleist Cup veteran, having competed on a number of teams since the reintroduction of the Ontario / Quebec Matches in 1977. This year, Gar will be leading the team at his home course, Mississaugua Golf & Country Club.

"Gar's appointment as the Titleist Cup Captain was a no brainer," said Ontario PGA Tournament Captain, Rob Hickson. "His passion for the game and his competitive nature make him a fitting choice and his leadership will surely move us closer to the win we've been seeking."

Hamilton is one of the most accomplished players in the history of the Ontario PGA and Canadian PGA. He has been successful at every level of golf and has claimed almost every Ontario PGA individual stroke play event highlighted by one Ontario PGA Championship and three Ontario PGA Seniors Championships. In addition to his Ontario victories, Hamilton has also won the Canadian PGA Club Professional Championship four times and the Canadian PGA Seniors Championship once.

"I am extremely honoured to be selected as the Titleist Cup Captain," said Hamilton a former PGA Tour player. "It will be an awesome experience and I'm looking forward to leading the group and hopefully bringing the cup back to Ontario," added Gar who was a member of the last Ontario Team to claim victory back in 1993.

Coincidentally the Titleist Cup will be played at Mississaugua Golf & Country Club, the course where Gar has been the Head Professional for 21 seasons. Additionally Quebec's captain, Yves Tremblay is a former Indiana University golf team member, Gars Alma Matter. Although Yves and Gar never played with one another the IU connection will surely make the competition that much more spirited.

The Ontario PGA would also like to thank outgoing captains Tim McCutcheon (2008) and Kevin Corriveau who led the team in 2006 and 2007. Tim and Kevin will still be involved with Titleist Cup as advisors to Hamilton.

The Titleist Cup or Ontario/Quebec Matches have been played consecutively since 1977. Prior to 1977 the matches were played intermittently from 1961 until the mid 1970's. In total the Quebec PGA has won the matches 21 times while the Ontario PGA has won it ten times. Teams are comprised of the top 12 Ontario and Quebec Canadian PGA Professionals and 2 Apprentices. This year's cup will be played at the historic Mississaugua Golf & Country Club
