Three PGA of Canada - Ontario Zone Championships decided at Maple Downs Golf & Country Club

August 15, 2017
Maple Downs Golf and Country Club hosted the PGA of Canada - Ontario Zone 2017 Senior Championship, Sixty-Plus Senior Championship, and Women's Championship this week. After a fantastic week of golf there were three champions crowned. Ken Tarling stole the headline when he came from behind and forced David Banks to a playoff. Ian Clarke (75) and John C Davis (72) won their respective divisions in the Sixty-Plus Senior Championship and Jennifer Jaszek took Maggie Trainor to a playoff to win the Women's Championship.
Tarling is the only player to win the PGA of Canada - Ontario Zone Senior Championship for four consecutive years from 2008-2011, and he added a fifth Senior Championship win today. Tarling made seven birdies over the two-day championship, and needed a very nice up-and-down from beside the eighteenth green to force Banks to a playoff. "I played really well today from tee-to-green," Tarling recounted after the round. "I wasn't putting well enough though. I missed some three footers, some four footers, even one from eighteen inches." Tarling made up for his missed putts today with his superior ball striking. After 36-holes Banks and Tarling were deadlocked at 4-under so they went back to the first tee to decide the championship.
Banks was up first and his swing changed the entire dynamic of the playoff. His right-hand slipped off the club and his ball sailed to the right. After landing in the short-game practice area, Tarling changed his game plan.
"As soon as I saw Banksie miss right I knew I was going to play it safe. I would have had to make two really big swings to get there in two, so I laid up to about sixty yards. When David couldn't make it clean through the trees on his second shot I knew that I was going to ease my way towards the hole. I had a decent birdie look but I knew I could two-putt for the win so I tapped it close to the hole and finished with an easy par."
Tarling was playing inspired.  Saul Spears, who was a long time member of Maple Downs Golf & Country Club and a good friend of Tarling's, suddenly passed away last night.  Only four hours after coming to the club yesterday to watch Tarling play. Tarling gave credit to Spears for pushing him throughout the round today. "I was thinking about him practically all day," Tarling said solemnly. "It really drove me forward today. I wanted to win for Saul."

The men weren't the only ones to need a dramatic playoff to decide a championship. Jennifer Jaszek and Maggie Trainor finished neck-and-neck after eighteen holes at 4-over 78. After they both sent laser drives down the middle of the first fairway their balls were fifteen feet from one another. Each player found a different greenside bunker and made incredible sand shots to turn the playoff to a putt-off. Maggie Trainor was up first and narrowly missed her birdie look. Jaszek made no mistake and took advantage of the opportunity. With a birdie on the first playoff hole, Jennifer Jaszek won her fourth PGA of Canada - Ontario Zone Women's Championship.
