Billy Walsh has a Great Second Day to Secure Assistants Championship

Yesterday capped off the second day of the two-day 2016 PGA of Ontario Assistants Championship at Tangle Creek Golf Club.  The first day saw Adrian Cord (Weston Golf & CC) soar off to an early lead with a nice four under par performance.  Later in the day Joe D'Alfonso (The Copper Creek Academy) put up a bogey-free 68 of his own and shared the lead headed into the second day.

By the time the final group of Adrian Cord, Joe D'Alfonso, and Wes Stanford (Oakdale Golf & CC) was set to tee off Billy Walsh's onslaught had already started.  Walsh (Fairtree Golfing Centre) birdied his first two holes and made the turn at 3-under.  With consecutive birdies on holes eleven and twelve, 359yrds and 385yrds respectively, and two more birdies on holes fourteen and sixteen it was clear that Billy Walsh had taken over the tournament and everybody else was playing for second place.  "I really like playing from behind," Walsh said. "It forces me to get aggressive early and if I can maintain that mindset for the rest of the round, I can score well."  Score well he did, as his 7-under 65 combined with a 2-under 70 on the first day left him at 9-under for the tournament and a three shot cushion over D'Alfonso.

D'Alfonso nearly played mistake free golf, only recording one bogey over the 36 holes but it wasn't enough, he finished the tournament at 6-under.  "I played really well," he mentioned after the round.  "I knew somebody was going to go deep today.  I had a bogey on 14 and I knew that would cost me.  Luckily Billy had me by three and not only by one."  Brian McCann, Chris Bevan, and Jamie DiPeiro rounded out the top five.
