Mackenzie and Walsh catch fire late to win Sr Pro/Jr Pro Team Series

July 26, 2016
Teams of PGA of Ontario professionals from across the province gathered Monday at National Pines Golf Club in Barrie for the Senior Pro/Jr Pro Team Series.  After years playing at Meadowbrook Golf & CC, the PGA of Ontario changed venues and National Pines Golf Club was an excellent host.  The Thomas McBroom designed course was on Golf Digest’s best new courses in Canada when it opened in 1992. The Sr Pro/Jr Pro has notoriously been a low scoring event that sees one Senior Professional (50+) teamed up with a Junior Professional (Under 50) for an 18-hole scramble.
After a four year hiatus, Bill Mackenzie (The Academy at St Andrews East GC) returned to the Sr Pro/Jr Pro winners circle, accompanied by partner Bill Walsh (Fairtree Golf Centre).  The pair put together a very impressive 11-under 61, but it wasn’t until the end that they thought they were in the mix for the lead.  “We were playing good, not great, for most of the round,” Walsh said after the trophy presentation with a smile.  “But we were seven under in our last five holes.”  The hot finish catapulted them into top spot besting teams of Bob Panasik/Danny King, Brad Kerfoot/Dan Clark, David Banks/John Najev, and Grant Holcomb/Joshua Doan all by one shot, and avoiding a four team playoff.  The amazing finish was highlighted by back-to-back eagles on the ninth and the tenth holes, 500 and 489 yards respectively.  It was Bill Mackenzie’s second career Sr Pro/Jr Pro victory and Bill Walsh’s first.
