Pro/Junior Championship

July 7, 2016
The PGA of Ontario was at Wooden Sticks Golf Club this week for the 2016 PING Pro/Junior Championship.  PING is an active supporter of junior golf in Ontario and have stepped up in a big way this year to help ensure the juniors have a memorable experience with the PGA of Ontario.  The Pro/Junior Championship is a one-day best ball tournament where handicap indexes are in play and, at days end, there are two champions: Gross and Net.
40 teams from across the zone played on Tuesday and they were a testament to the strength and future of golf in our province.  "It's really encouraging to see all of these juniors here," Executive Director Kevin Purcell said as he scanned the practice facility before play. "This event is one of the most important and fun tournaments that we have on the schedule each year.  It's always great to see how our PGA Professionals continue to mentor and invest in the next generation."
By the end of play it was Weston Golf & CC who dominated both sides of the leaderboard.  Adrian Cord (Weston Golf & CC) was excited about how eager the Weston Juniors were, "We had so much interest from the Juniors, all of our available Professionals are here.  It's a great problem to have."  Their enthusiasm paid off as both divisions, Gross and Net (shared), were won by Weston Golf Club teams of Alex Wilson & Justin Allen (-7),  while Adrian Cord & Owen Allen (-11) shared the Net title with Rosedale Golf Club's Mark Paterson & Jackson Cowie (-11).  The two winning Weston cards combined for 17 birdies and two eagles, while Paterson & Cowie knocked in three net birdies and four net eagles.
The PING Pro/Junior Championship is always a great opportunity for Professionals to connect better with their students and help cultivate their game while giving them a first-hand look at PGA of Ontario tournaments.  Special Thanks to Wooden Sticks Golf Club for another great year and PING for the prizing and making sure all of the Juniors left with a generous tee gift.
