GolfTEC Markham wins Head Pro/Assistant Pro Battle at Lora Bay

June 22, 2016
Mother Nature was in a particularly bad mood on Monday as 46 teams from across the zone gathered at The Golf Club at Lora Bay.  This stunning golf club was the host for the 2016 Head Professional/Assistant Professional Team Series.  Intense heat combined with uncharacteristically high winds made for a difficult day on the course.  Teams were playing a 6-6-6 shotgun format consisting of six Scramble holes, six Alternate Shot, and finally six Better Ball holes.  Strategies vary team by team but the HP/AP is always one of the most fun and highly contested team events on the PGA of Ontario schedule.
Steven Fox and co-worker Steve Rodriguez, believe it or not, were playing together for the very first time on Monday.  "We have been trying to get out and play together for a while now and it has never really worked out," Fox said after the round.  "I knew (Rodriguez) was a good player and he could hit it a mile, so if I could help here and there, I knew we would be in good shape."  By the days end the pair from GolfTEC Markham strung together six birdies and an eagle, which was good enough for top spot.
Beginning the day on the eighth hole and with Alternate Shot, it was a bit of a slow start for the duo as they found themselves at even par after seven holes, but things quickly turned.  Rodriguez attributed it to Fox's putter, "(Fox) found his stroke and once he did, I barely even had to putt.  He was making everything."  They continued to cruise through the Better Ball portion finishing it at 2-under, but still needed to make a late push if they wanted to be near the top of the field.  With an eagle on the 510 yard par 5 they finished their last four holes at 4-under to finish the round at 6-under 66, besting the team from Dalewood Golf Club (James Carter and Brad Pemberton) by one.  When Rodriguez, who is no stranger to the winners circle, was asked about how the wind affected the day he said, "You can't think about how the other players are dealing with the wind.  We are all playing the same course.  We took it hole by hole and shot by shot."  Deer Ridge Golf Club, The Golf Club at Lora Bay, and GolfTEC Richmond Hill filled out the top five.
Special Thanks to all the Head Professionals who brought their Assistants out for a great day and to The Golf Club at Lora Bay for being an excellent host.
