Danny King stays hot in Merit Travel Golf Vacations Match Play Finals

Danny King stays hot in Merit Travel Golf Vacations Match Play Finals

As is every year, the final four in the PGA of Ontario Merit Travel Golf Vacations Match Play Finals came to Beacon Hall Golf Club to go toe to toe for a chance to take the Match Play Championship title.  This year found three of the four returning semi-finalists from last year: Gord Burns, Alf Callowhill, and defending champ Steve Rodriguez.  The only player who did not make the final four last year was Danny King.  King has had a year to remember, to say the least.  So far in 2015 King has won the PGA Championship of Canada, PGA of Ontario Championship, the PGA of Ontario Summer Challenge, and he was looking to cap it all off with the Match Play Title.

The morning matches found King squaring off against Gord Burns, and Steve Rodriguez trying to defend his title against Alf Callowhill.  Both morning matches turned out to be fairly one sided as King and Rodriguez finished off their competitors 5&4 to move onto the afternoon matches.

After a bogey free round in the morning Danny King seemed poised to take the title but he was in stiff competition against the defending champ Steve Rodriguez.  Rodriguez is a match play specialist finding his way into the final four for three consecutive years.  It looked bleak for Rodriguez early as King continued his hot play from the morning.  With his back against the wall, Rodriguez made a push late in the round coming back from 2DOWN on the 15th hole and squared the match up on the 18th tee.  After a great golf shot around a tree, Rodriguez needed to go up and down to push the match to sudden death.  His green-side chip looked to be perfect before it caught the side of the fringe and slide past the hole.  He missed the long comeback putt and the pair removed their hats and Danny King was crowned the 2015 Merit Travel Golf Vacations Match Play Champion.
