Brian McCann goes Back to Back at the Assistants Championship

August 6, 2015

FENWICK, ON - Brian McCann arrived at Peninsula Lakes Golf Club early Tuesday morning for the first day of the two-day PGA of Ontario TaylorMade adidas Assistants Championship by returning the trophy he took back to Brampton Golf Club just one year ago.  What he didn’t know, as he brought the trophy to the registration table, was that it would spend at least one more year in the Brampton Golf Club trophy case.

The weather cooperated, and conditions were ideal for scoring on the first day of the Championship and the scores reflected it.  Peninsula Lakes was in stellar condition and the greens were rolling true.  Sixteen players were under par going into the second day and it created a logjam at the top of the leaderboard.  Bill Walsh (Fairtree Golf Centre) led the way and he was poised to take the top spot in the PGA of Ontario Player of the Year standings from Nick Kenney (The National Golf Club of Canada) by firing a 5-under 66. Brian McCann found himself tied with three others, one shot back from Walsh going into the second day where playing conditions would prove to be much more difficult.

The wind was up and a cold front blanketed the Niagara region, which affected the early scores and limited any fireworks from players chasing Walsh.  That was until Brian McCann teed it up.  In the midst of a field, happy to walk off the green with par, McCann was making birdies and very early found himself leading the tournament and he didn’t look back.  “I really struggled with the putter at the Canada Cup last week, I came back from Quebec and worked in the shop at Brampton on Monday night, I was playing with my setup and shoulder alignment and that really worked.  I was making momentum putts that I wasn’t making last week.”

McCann carried that momentum and finished the day with a bogey-free 5-under 66 which was good enough to pass Walsh and successfully defend the Assistants Championship title for the first time since Dave Levesque did it in 2010.  Other notable scores from the Assistants Championship: Jim Zwolak (70, 66), Bill Walsh (66, 69), Brad Kerfoot (67, 68), and Kyler Murphy (68, 67).
