Gary Jeffrey makes birdie on 18 to win the PGA of Ontario Senior Spring Open

For Immediate Release

May 20, 2015

BELLEVILLE, ON - The PGA of Ontario went east this year for their 2015 Senior Spring Open and it was a wise decision.  Located in Belleville Ontario, Black Bear Ridge Golf Course hangs its hat as one of the most beautiful golf courses in the province and it did not disappoint.  "Not only is Black Bear Ridge stunning to look at, it is a true test and its variety of holes will challenge any player up to the task", Executive Director Kevin Purcell commented after play on Wednesday.  Players could not stop talking about the conditions of Black Bear Ridge Golf Course and the attention to detail by the grounds crew.

There were twenty two seniors (50+) in the field today and they were all put to the test, but after the round there can only be one.  Gary Jeffrey, who just recently turned 50, made sure he was the last man standing at days end.  "I got off to a fortunate start out of the gate; I had some lucky breaks and was happy to be one-over par after five holes." Jeffrey reminisced after the award ceremony.  "From that point on I saw every hole very well and made the shots that I wanted to make."  Number six was the turning point in his round going birdie, eagle, birdie through the next stretch.

It wasn't all clear sailing for Jeffrey coming home though, "I had a tough three putt on 15 and made bogey.  Then I took an unplayable on 17 and struggled to save bogey.  I really thought I needed to birdie 18 to have a shot at the title," and birdie he did.  Gary Jeffrey made five birdies and an eagle on his was to a 3-under 69 besting Oshawa native John Rushnell (Oshawa Golf Club) for sole possession of first place, joining the likes of past champions Gar Hamilton, Dan Clark, Ron Janes, Dave Bell, Keir Smith, and last years champ Mark Kappes.

The PGA of Ontario will be at Taboo Muskoka Resort next week for the Spring Open.  A two-day stroke play event which is the first major on the PGA of Ontario tournament schedule.
