Granite and Brantford Win Tournament of Champions


Granite Golf Club and Brantford G&CC win PGA of Ontario Tournament of Champions 

MILTON, ON - With the weather taking a turn for the better and golf fans across the province feeling the itch for get out and start swinging, the PGA of Ontario, TaylorMade Adidas Golf, and Rattlesnake Golf Club hosted the Tournament of Champions.  Men's and Ladies club champions from their respective clubs teamed up with their PGA of Ontario Professionals to go toe to toe in a 3-person best ball tournament.  Although the season is young, teams from the Granite Golf Club and Brantford Golf & Country Club appeared in mid-season form winning their respective divisions. 

Playing in the event for just the second time, champions last year, Brantford G&CC Head Professional Dan Poort brought his team of Kim Pitblado and Eric Shea to try and defend their title, and defend they did.  Carding an impressive 11 birdies, they finished the day at 9-under 63.  The format for the event is one gross best ball and by the end of the round on the Copperhead Course, the trio bested Dalewood Golf Club and York Downs Golf & CC by 1-stroke. 

"We didn't have a number in mind, we had it at ten for a while and thought we would be close.  After the front nine we were six-under par and we knew we were in good shape.  Eric birdied the first hole and that got us on to the right track.  We just needed to stay steady coming home"

On the other side, Sidewinder course, Granite Golf Club Head Professional James Clark and partners Ivy Stienberg and Stuart Pulkinen would not be outdone by their Copperhead counterparts.  The group left their mark finishing the round with six birdies and an eagle to hoist the TaylorMade Tournament of Champions trophy at 6-under 66. 

When asked about the importance of this event to a Head Professional Clark said, "It means everything...absolutely everything. It's a great opportunity to bond with two great members, and for me as a first year Head Professional, it's a real treat."

TaylorMade sweetened the deal for all of the competitors by providing a gift certificate and the opportunity to visit and get fitted at one of their Performance Labs.  While also providing golfers with the company's newest golf ball models including the new Tour Preferred, Tour Preferred X and Project (a). The Project (a) (for amateur) ball is designed to give amateurs added spin from 150 into the green for more control.

The PGA of Ontario's tournament season continues next week with the Pro Pro Team Series.  The PGA of Ontario Pro Pro Team Series is one of the PGA of Ontario's most storied and sought after crowns. The list of past champions reads like a who's who of Canadian Golf. Past Champions include; Moe Norman, Al Balding, George Knudson, Bob Panasik, John Irwin, Gar Hamilton, Ken Tarling, Danny King and the list goes on. Contested at the picturesque Club at North Halton, the Pro / Pro is a team event that consists of two Head Professionals competing in a two person best ball.
