Brian Hadley looking for three-peat

Brian Hadley looking for three-peat as Titleist FootJoy PGA of Ontario Championship returns to Deer Ridge GC

For Immediate Release

July 10, 2014

KITCHENER, ON - The top players from the PGA of Ontario will be teeing it up next week, July 14-15, at Deer Ridge Golf Club for the Titleist FootJoy PGA of Ontario Championship.

Two-time defending champion, Brian Hadley, heads up a stellar field that includes Bill Walsh Jr., who finished T2 at the championship last year with Kyle Kirkland from Cobble Beach Golf Links. Walsh, who teaches out of Fairtree Golf Center, is currently No. 1 in the PGA of Canada Player Rankings presented by RBC and is coming off a second place finish at the PGA Championship of Canada and T5 at last weeks Quebec Open.

"It's been a tough year so far. I'm not sure what to expect, but I wasn't expecting to shoot a 59 last summer and somehow I did that," said Hadley who finished T12 earlier this week with a 75 in the Golfing Buddies PGA of Ontario Summer Championship at Twenty Valley G&CC. "Hopefully I can get it in play, and there are still some good vibes from last year hanging around."

In 2013, as the championship went to Deer Ridge for the first time, Hadley fired an incredible 13-under par score of 59 in the opening round for an eight-stroke lead over Walsh. The assistant professional at Thames Valley Golf Club in London went 4-under on the front nine, which included a 3-putt on No. 1 for a par. He played the final nine holes in 9-under to get to 13-under for the round that included just 22 putts. For the two days he fired rounds of 59-69-128 to easily win the 2013 Titleist FootJoy PGA of Ontario Championship by 10 strokes.

Others to keep an eye on this time around include GAO Head Coach Reggie Millage, who finished fourth last summer at Deer Ridge and just this week, earned a one-stroke victory in the Regular Division at the Golfing Buddies PGA of Ontario Summer Championship at Twenty Valley G&CC over a group that included Jeff Mills from Wildfire GC, Jonathan Anderson from Northern Greens Golf Center, Scott Cowx from Hamilton G&CC Teaching Academy and Brian McCann from Brampton GC.

Deer Ridge, a secluded private club with an 18-hole Tom McBroom designed layout that plays through majestic Carolinian Forest and the rambling Grand River Watershed, promises to be a solid test of golf once again.

"Brian put together the round of lifetime last year for his 59 which was great to see, however I just can't imagine it happening again. The round generated a great buzz in the local media which was great to see. It even made it as far as the Golf Channel which was great exposure for both the PGA of Ontario as well as Deer Ridge," says Deer Ridge Head Professional Rich Morel.

The recently renovated layout wintered extremely well and is in fantastic condition. "We're very excited to be hosting this timeless championship for the second straight season. It's a great opportunity to showcase our facility to some of the top professionals in the province. We received some excellent feedback last season which we anticipate will only increase this time around," Morel added.

Locals in the field from Waterloo Region include: Adam Beange and Taylor Prilisauer from Deer Ridge GC, Chris Wehrle, Alex Riddell and Ryan Davis from Whistle Bear GC and area resident Dave Wettlaufer.

Previous winners of the PGA of Ontario Championship in the field include; Brian McCann, Ron Kenesky, Danny King, Bruce Rogerson, Ian Doig, Jim Farrelly, Dave Wettlaufer, Craig Marseilles, Ken Tarling, Gar Hamilton and Ian Clarke.

The first round of the championship will see the field of 90-plus cut down to 60, plus ties for the final round. Tee offs are scheduled to begin at 7 am on July 14th and at 8 am on July 15th. To stay up to date on the entire tournament visit the tournament site HERE.
