Michael Sheppard leads the Golf Trends PGA of Ontario Assistants’ Championship

FENWICK, ON – There’s a crowded leaderboard after Round One of the Golf Trends PGA of Ontario Assistants Championship at Peninsula Lakes Golf Club.

Michael Sheppard, the Director of Instruction at the Momentum Golf Academy at Royal Ontario Golf Club, finds himself in top spot heading into Wednesday’s second and final round.

“Any time you can get the lead it helps,” says Sheppard who teed off in the second group of the day at 7:40 am and then spent the afternoon and evening supervising junior golf camps and teaching lessons. “It’s a new situation for me. I’m usually trying to catch the leaders. I just going to go out on Tuesday and try to repeat how I did today.”

Sheppard had an uneventful front nine as he carded his first birdie of the day on No. 9 to get to 1-under. A birdie on No. 10 also helped, but the pars continued until he finally started sinking some putts as he birdied Nos. 16, 17 and 18 to finish the round at 5-under, 66.

“Today was one of my better ball striking rounds and in the end I was able to make some putts,” says Sheppard, who attended nearby Niagara College for the golf management program.

A total of 16 golfers in the field of 60 shot even-par 71 or better. Ron Kenesky from Twenty Valley Golf and Country Club sits alone in second place at 4-under, 67. Four players finished T3 including; Adam Beange and AJ McKenzie from Deer Ridge Golf Club, John Moon from Markham Golf Dome and Reg Millage from The Golf Lab.

The rest of the field remains bunched up, while defending champion Bill Walsh finds himself T16 at even-par 71.
