PICKERING, ON - Brian McCann appears to have his swing and putter in full gear as he prepares to defend his title at next week's Trimark Sportswear Group PGA of Ontario Spring Championship.

McCann of Mississauga, ON, No. 1 in the PGA of Canada national rankings, is looking forward to teeing it up at Heron Point Golf Links near Ancaster after a winning his U.S. Open local qualifier at the Bellevue Country Club in Syracuse, N.Y and placing second at the PGA of Ontario Assistants' Spring Championship at Wyndance Golf Club earlier this week.

"I enjoy teeing it up at Heron Point. It's a really strong layout, one of my favourite, right up there with National Pines," says McCann who won the 2012 PGA of Ontario Spring Championship at The Club at Bond Head in a playoff over Keir Smith. "It's a fun course to play with lots of birdie opportunities out there, but you really need to hit into the right quadrant on the greens to score well."

After the Trimark Sportswear Group PGA of Ontario Spring Championship, McCann, who teaches out of The Academy at BraeBen Bradlee Ryall Golf, will focus on US Open Sectional Qualifying at Springfield Country Club in Ohio on June 3.

"I still remember playing in an AJGA event outside Philly in 1989 and we slipped over to Merion GC to watch the US Amateur and it was simply amazing," says McCann who has yet to play in a US Open. "I have always wanted to play in a US Open, so when I heard it was coming to Merion a few years back I decided I really wanted to give it a shot."

A strong field of more than 80 PGA of Ontario members will tee it up Monday and Tuesday in the 36-hole stroke play competition at Heron Point including the five consecutive past champions; McCann in 2012, Bill Walsh Jr. in 2011, Danny King in 2010, Reggie Millage in 2009 and Scott Bogle in 2008.

"I'm looking forward to playing Heron Point next week and teeing it up again with Brian," Walsh said noting McCann putted extremely well at the PGA of Ontario Assistants' Spring Championship at Wyndance Golf Club. "Heron Point is a great golf course, that puts a premium on ball striking - you have to hit it well to score well out there."
