CAMBRIDGE, ON - It took just one playoff hole for the duo of Maggie Trainor and Brad Lawrence to win their first ANNIKA Academy PGA of Ontario Mixed Championship Wednesday at Cambridge Golf Club.

Lawrence bombed a 300-yard drive that stayed in the fairway to start the playoff on No. 1, while the husband and wife team of Scott Cowx and Kimiye Nishizaki-Cowx were a few yards back in the rough. From there, both teams hit the green, but after the Cowxs missed their birdie attempts, Trainor showed Lawrence the way and he drained the putt to seal the victory worth $1,200.

"It was a good day. Neither of us had been here since taking our Playing Ability Tests a few years ago, so it was fun to team up and give it a go," said Lawrence, who is a Class A Professional at Weston G&CC, while Trainor is an Elite Apprentice at Dundas Valley G&CC. They started strong going 6-under par on the front nine and then 4-under on the back to finish in a tie with the Cowxs at 10-under par, 62. Rhonda Fleury and Henry Brunton from Henry Brunton Golf and Mary Pat Quilty at Settlers' Ghost GC and G.W. King from The Academy at Georgian Bay finished T3 at 9-under, 63 in a field of 20 teams.

Lawrence and Trainor played in the championship as a team in 2010 and 2011 when it was at Midland G&CC. This was the first time it was held at Cambridge Golf Club. "Aside from when we split the fairways on No. 11 we were never far apart. Coming down the stretch, I thought we would make a cheque at best. We didn't expect a playoff," Lawrence said.

The Cowxs played the Mixed Championship from 2002 to 2008, but never won it. They had taken the last four years off to start raising a family before deciding to get back to it. "It's our first round of golf together in two to three years. It's the only way we were going to make time to play together," said Cowx, who is the Head Teaching Professional at the Hamilton G&CC Teaching Academy, while his wife is a Class A Pro at Brantford G&CC. Last week Cowx caddied in the US Open for Mackenzie Hughes at Merion Golf Club and after teaching 13 lessons on Tuesday he found himself back at Cambridge GC, where 19 years ago he passed his Playing Ability Test. "This course has matured nicely. I can tell you that its fairways are about as wide as Marion's, but the rough is a little more playable," he said noting, "I started to give my playing partner all the yardages today and that didn't go over too well, so the caddy in me got quickly retired."

Louise Zylstra, a Class A Professional at Maple Downs G&CC, broke 80 for the very first time in her life at her PAT in the early 1990s. "I was working at Scarboro G&CC in the shop at the time and they encouraged me to give it a try. I shot 78 in the first round and something like 82 in the second round to make it through," says Zylstra who finished T5 in the Mixed Championship with Maples Downs Head Professional Michael Moniz. "All I really remember is that when I was driving to Cambridge I heard a song on the radio and I sung it all the way around, but I don't remember what it was. There was no pressure on me back then. I guess I didn't know better and just made the most of it."

The formal zone Playing Ability Test returns to Cambridge Golf Club on July 4-5.
