MILTON, ON -- At the beginning of 2017 the PGA of Canada – Ontario Zone re-shaped their season-long Player of the Year standings into the newly formed and generously backed ‘Chase for the Breenie Cup presented by Triple Bogey Brewing Co.’.  Through a combination of events spread throughout the tournament schedule players accumulate points all going towards the coveted player of the year Breenie Cup title.  Bob Breen’s wife Marylyn, daughter Kristie, and grand-daughter Jessica were all at Glencairn Golf Club this week to congratulate and present the inaugural Chase for the Breenie Cup trophy to it’s new champion, Bill Walsh.

A perennial contender, Bill Walsh had a stellar playing year accumulating points in five Breenie Cup events, winning the PGA of Canada – Ontario Zone’s Fall Classic and finishing runner-up in the Player of the Year Championship.  Walsh finished the 2017 tournament season with 324.6 Breenie Cup points, which was thirty-five points clear of Gord Burns who led the Chase for most of the year.  The honour of being the inaugural champion of a points race named after the great Bob Breen wasn’t lost on Walsh.  “It’s a tremendous honour.  I was fortunate enough to play with Bob and it goes without saying, he’s one of the legends of the PGA.  To be able to have my name on his trophy, it is really special.”

Marylyn Breen was thrilled to have Walsh be the first to win the Chase for the Breenie Cup title. “Our family is very very pleased to accept this honour that the PGA of Canada – Ontario Zone has given Bob and the rest of our family.  Billy Walsh had a fantastic year and deserves to win Bob’s trophy.  We know he is looking down on us smiling as we make all of those putts right into the hole.  He would be proud of what we have done here.”  Marylyn Breen continued to share a story about how she had played golf with Walsh’s parents years ago and how fitting it was that Walsh was the first to etch his name in this prestigious trophy.

“I think first and foremost I was pretty consistent this year,” Walsh reminisced.  “I had some opportunities to do well in some tournaments early on this year and I think I got too aggressive in my game plans and what I was trying to do, especially at the TaylorMade Ontario Zone Championship, but I settled myself down, kept playing my game, and finished the season strong.  I have to really thank TaylorMade, for me their equipment this year has been unbelievable.  I’ve picked up a club in distance with the new TP5 ball and the 770 Irons have been awesome for me.  I need to thank Triple Bogey too, for getting behind the Breenie Cup in a big way and sponsoring us all year.  I know all the players were thrilled to have them on board and we look forward to growing this event along side them.”

Congratulations Bill Walsh on a great year.  Thank you to Triple Bogey Brewing Co. who reinforced the Chase for the Breenie Cup adding $5000 to the prize money, and all of the PGA Professionals who supported Chase for the Breenie Cup events this season.
